Direct Treatment

Direct Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy

At Partners for Progress, our Direct Treatment Program offers a powerful, evidence-based approach to treatment that uses the horse as part of a comprehensive therapy plan. Led by licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapists, this program is designed to support individuals facing a wide range of physical, neurological, and sensory challenges.

Direct treatment is not a recreational riding program, but rather, it is a highly specialized form of therapy where the movement of the horse is carefully integrated into a customized treatment plan.

Customized Goals, Personalized Progress

No two clients are alike and neither are their therapy plans. Our licensed therapists perform a detailed evaluation and develop individualized goals tailored to each client’s unique needs and developmental stage. Family input and collaborative planning ensure that each goal is meaningful and relevant, whether it’s improving daily living skills, gaining independence, or supporting long-term growth.

Our therapists continuously assess progress and adapt each session accordingly, using both on-the-ground and mounted activities to create a dynamic and responsive experience.

How It Works

Each participant receives an evaluation delivered by a licensed Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, or Speech/Language Pathologist to pinpoint deficit areas that impact the function of daily life. Each participant is then given designated goals written for interventional therapy that are established every 10 weeks by the therapists for function gain. The therapists also document progress for the goals that address each individual’s needs weekly for the greatest potential possible.

Focused On:

  • Focus & Task Completion: Using mnemonics, checklists, and repetition to stay on track

  • Self-Regulation & Impulse Control: Learning mindfulness techniques, using sensory tools, and practicing reflection

  • Adaptability & Resilience: Navigating changes in schedule or environment and problem-solving through challenges

  • Communication: Expressing needs, initiating conversations, and developing confidence with peers and staff

  • Organization & Spatial Awareness: Managing tools and tasks, understanding surroundings, and building memory

  • Safety & Advocacy: Recognizing hazards, following directions, and learning to speak up for themselves

  • Sustainability: Retaining skills and practicing them in new environments, including at home and in the community
