Early Years

At Partners for Progress, we witness miracles of all different sizes every day. We see children who struggle to connect with the world find solace and strength through the gentle power of our programs and the beautiful connection of horses. Today, we share the extraordinary story of Jackson K., a young man whose journey with PFP spans over 15 years of overcoming challenges and displays unbelievable progress.

Jackson's brilliance is undeniable, but his mind operates at a pace that can feel overwhelming. The world, with its constant sensory input, can be a chaotic and frightening place for him. He came to us when he was only 2 years old, and in those early years, Jackson's primary coping mechanisms were crying and running, desperate attempts to escape the overwhelming stimuli, which is not uncommon. He has faced countless challenges, along with his family, to prevent overstimulating situations from escalating, like escaping from moving vehicles to jumping from dangerous heights, all stemming from his overwhelming impulses.

Our focus with Jackson has always been on helping him navigate this complex world. We've worked tirelessly to develop strategies for self-control, to curb his impulses, and to ensure his safety. But perhaps the most significant impact of PFP has been in fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.

The Impact

We remember the time when Jackson was terrified of loud noises; the sound of a leaf blower would understandably send him into a panic. However, through consistent therapy at the barn, gentle exposure to the stimuli surrounding him, and the inevitable connections made with our herd of horses, Jackson gradually learned to tolerate the noise. Today, he can even help other children who are afraid of loud sounds.

And who could forget the day Jackson finally mastered the art of trotting? It was a monumental achievement, a testament to his perseverance and determination, and all the preceding years where Jackson never gave up. The joy on his face as he confidently guided his horse around the arena was truly heartwarming and a moment none of us will ever forget.

These are just a few examples of the incredible progress we’ve been able to watch Jackson make. Over 15 years, we’ve seen Jackson truly flourish into a brave, confident, and incredibly kind young adult.

The Transformation

The barn has become a sanctuary for Jackson. The connection with the horses, the unwavering support of our dedicated and loving staff, and the genuine camaraderie he shares with others in our program have provided him with a sense of peace and belonging that he rarely finds elsewhere. When he's not at the barn, he's thinking about it, dreaming about it, longing to be back with his equine friends and the community he cherishes.

The impact of PFP extends far beyond the barn. Jackson has made incredible strides in his personal growth and now even emulates wonderful leadership qualities! He has learned to manage his anxieties, to regulate his emotions, and to communicate his needs more effectively and with ease. He has developed a profound sense of confidence and self-worth.

For anyone who’s been lucky enough to meet Jackson, you know that his warm heart and love for this community radiate so brightly in all that he does. His smile is contagious, and this young adult, who was once greatly overwhelmed by the environment of the barn, now cherishes every moment he’s here, longing to return when he is gone.

Looking to the Future

Last January, Jackson joined our barn crew on Saturdays, and the excitement he feels is palpable. Each week, he eagerly anticipates the opportunity to contribute to the program that has given him so much.

We feel so honored to be able to provide a journey for our clients that lasts a lifetime. With Jackson, we know he is going to continue to grow and blow us away with what he’ll do next.

Jackson's story is a testament to the transformative power of equine therapy. It's a reminder that every child, regardless of their challenges, deserves the opportunity to thrive.
